Commercial Van Insurance vs Courier Van Insurance

Updated: Oct 17

When it comes to insuring your van for business purposes, it's important to understand the differences between commercial van insurance and courier van insurance. While both types of insurance are designed to protect your vehicle and your business, there are key distinctions that you should be aware of, which determine what insurance you should have.

This, of course, is to ensure you are covered by your insurer in the event of a claim. If you are not insured with the correct insurance, your insurer may refuse to pay the claim, and you might be left to pay the cost out of pocket. Many try to get away with obtaining insufficient, cheaper insurance, until they experience this problem first hand.

Commercial Van Insurance

  • Designed for businesses that use vans for general commercial purposes, such as transporting materials, tools, or equipment.

  • Typically is more expensive than private motor vehicle insurance.

  • Covers a wide range of industries and activities, including tradesmen, builders, plumbers, electricians, and more.

  • Comprehensive,Third Party Only and Third Party (Fire and Theft) options are the main insurance types available.

  • Offers optional extras such as breakdown cover and tools in transit insurance.

Courier Van Insurance

  • Specifically tailored for businesses that involve the transportation and delivery of goods as a core part of their operations.

  • This is typically more expensive than any private or commercial van insurance, as the risk covered is greater than any private or commercial use.

  • Comprehensive and Third Party Only options are the main insurance types available.

  • May have restrictions on the types of goods that can be transported and the areas that can be covered. E.g. covering a particular limit of dangerous goods or having a distance restriction (the van must be operating within 200km of the depot location).

  • May include options such as a replacement hire vehicle in the case of an accident, free windscreen replacement or excess free windscreen replacement.

It's important to choose the right type of insurance based on the nature of your business activities. If you primarily use your van for general commercial purposes, commercial van insurance may be more suitable. On the other hand, if your business involves regular deliveries and transportation of goods, courier van insurance is the better option to ensure comprehensive coverage. We also note there are some other delivery business models that are similar to the above, but require their own specialised cover - these include the following:

  • Food Delivery Driver Insurance

  • Freight Delivery Insurance

  • Dangerous Goods Delivery Insurance

If you are confused or unsure of which insurance you need, it is best to ask yourself the below questions:

Is my core business and earnings directly related to the goods I deliver?

Do I mostly use my vehicle for deliveries (parcels and packages)?

Do I work as a contractor or subcontractor and rely on a courier/ transport company for my work?

With the answers to these questions in mind, it is a lot easier to determine what type of insurance you need.
