What is insurance and why do we need it as Courier Drivers?

Updated: Jul 30

Insurance can be a tricky thing to understand especially if you have no prior knowledge of what you need. What do all these policies actually mean or cover? Commercial Motor, Public Liability, Marine transit, and Personal accident/sickness. Let's break these down;

What is Public liability insurance?

Public liability is a cover that protects you from damage or injury to someone else that is outside of your employees, that you could be found liable for. It's basically a policy that is protecting your legal liability to third parties, including clients, customers, and the public for injury or damage to their property, caused by you or your business.

What is Marine Transit?

This is insurance I think a lot of people get confused as the name is 'Marine' you automatically think that goods are only covered if they are transported via sea but that isn't the case. Marine transit covers all goods that are imported/exported via road, air, rail, and sea. The policy covers the goods that could be subjected to damage, loss, or theft.

What is a Personal accident /sickness?

This one is pretty self-explanatory, if you become sick or have an accident this policy will cover you from the loss of income that you would be earning if you were working. This cover is so important for a courier as you are usually your own boss.

Finally, possibly the most important one of all, Commercial Motor Insurance protects you against accidents and damage to your vehicle. Think about it like your vehicle is your office, you have to use it every day, so you want to make sure that you are properly protected.

Remember that insurance policies can be tailored to exactly what you need and require, so make sure you get your insurance arranged before you start driving!
