Updated: Oct 16

Looking at how to avoid accidents and stay safe as a courier driver, as well as to avoid dangerous situations.

On the Road

1. Obey Traffic Laws: Follow all traffic rules and regulations to ensure safe driving, which also helps you avoid accidents and gives you the best chance of avoiding unexpected hazards.

2. Stay Alert: Keep your eyes on the road and be aware of your surroundings. Avoid distractions while driving, such as using your phone or eating.

3. Regular Vehicle Maintenance: Ensure your vehicle is properly maintained to prevent breakdowns. It is important to check that brakes, lights, tires, and other essential parts are functioning well.

4. Properly Secure Cargo: Secure packages and parcels in your vehicle to prevent shifting during transit. Checking the wear and tear of any cargo restraints is also a good idea.

5. Use Safety Equipment: Wear your seat-belt at all times and use any other safety equipment provided.

6. Avoid Driving Tired: Make sure you’re well-rested before you start your shift. Fatigue can impair your driving abilities.

7. Be Aware of Blind Spots: Check your mirrors and be cautious of blind spots when changing lanes or turning.

8. Drive Defensively: Be prepared for other drivers to make mistakes. Anticipate potential hazards and be ready to react safely.

9. Plan Your Routes: Familiarize yourself with delivery locations, and routes, to avoid getting lost and reduce stress.

10. Never Drive Whilst Impaired: If you feel like you are not 100% fit to drive, don't take the risk. Things such as previous late night drinking and prescription medication could easily cause this issue.

Off the Road

1. Stay Aware of Your Surroundings: When you’re outside your vehicle, be mindful of your surroundings. Keep an eye on your belongings and be cautious in unfamiliar areas.

2. Lock Your Vehicle: Always lock your car when you’re not in it, especially if you’re leaving valuable items inside.

3. Be Cautious with Strangers: If someone approaches you or asks for help, be polite but cautious. If you feel uncomfortable, it’s okay to walk away or seek assistance from authorities.

4. Follow Company Guidelines: Adhere to any safety protocols or guidelines provided by your employer. If you aren't sure if you are doing something right, give them a call to check! It's always better to be safe than sorry.

5. Practice Personal Safety: Trust your instincts. If a situation doesn’t feel right, take steps to remove yourself from it or seek help.

6. Keep Emergency Contacts Handy: Have important phone numbers saved and easily accessible. This includes contacts for your company, emergency services, and personal contacts.

To stay safe as a courier driver, follow traffic laws, stay alert, and maintain your vehicle while driving, and be cautious of your surroundings, lock your vehicle, and follow safety guidelines when off the road. Ensure you’re well-rested, hydrated, and familiar with your routes to keep yourself and your vehicle secure.
